Look at Life was a series of short clips filmed by The Rank Organization for use as fillers before theatrical runs. The subjects varied, from everyday life to specialized topics.
In this clip from 1960, Look at Life takes a look at Night Lorry Drivers. From how they run to signals, and why you never stop for a lady in distress on the motorway at night.

I was born around this time (or just after) and was brought up knowing the road etiquette for police speed traps ahead or police (three taps on the foot brake) (or three flashes of the headlights from an oncoming car let you know there was police or a speed trap further up the road from where the other car came from), merging onto motorways other than matching speed was to reduce speed if necessary so the truck already on the motorway didn’t have to slow down to let you in or he’d move over into lane two if it was safe to do so, you reduce speed to let him clear you, you flash your headlights to let him know it’s safe to come back into lane one, then you pull out into lane two and continue past, once clear of him you’d alternate left and right indicator flashes to signal thank you.
Roads were certainly different back then.
